The Actual Formula (Don't Panic)

Metric (Easy Mode)

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²

Example: 70 kg ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9

Imperial (Slightly Annoying)

BMI = (weight in pounds ÷ height in inches²) × 703

Example: (154 lbs ÷ 68.9²) × 703 = 22.9

Yeah, the imperial version has that random 703 multiplier. Nobody knows why. It's just one of those things.

When BMI Gets It Wrong

Look, BMI isn't perfect. Here's when you should take it with a grain of salt:

  • You lift weights: Muscle weighs more than fat. If you're jacked, your BMI might say you're overweight when you're actually super fit.
  • You're an athlete: Same deal. Athletes often have "high" BMIs because of muscle mass.
  • You're pregnant: Obviously your weight is going to be different. BMI doesn't apply here.
  • You're under 18 or over 65: BMI was designed for adults in their prime. It's less accurate at the extremes.
  • You have a very small or very large frame: BMI assumes average bone structure. If you're built differently, the numbers might be off.
