Tips for Clearer Writing
Identify the Actor
Ask "Who is doing this?" If the doer is hidden or at the end of the sentence, you likely have passive voice. Move the actor to the beginning.
Watch for "by"
Phrases like "was done by" or "were made by" often signal passive voice. Flip the sentence to put the doer first.
Use Strong Verbs
Replace weak verb combinations (is/was + past participle) with strong, single verbs. "The ball was thrown" becomes "She threw the ball."
