About Dovetail Joints
What is a Dovetail Joint?
A dovetail joint is a strong, decorative wood joint commonly used in furniture making, especially for drawer construction. The joint consists of interlocking wedge-shaped pieces called "tails" (which resemble a dove's tail) and "pins" that fit together to create a mechanical lock.
Dovetail Angle Ratios
- 1:6 Ratio (~9.5 degrees): Best for softwoods like pine. The steeper angle provides more mechanical strength in softer materials.
- 1:7 Ratio (~8.1 degrees): A general-purpose angle suitable for most wood types. A good starting point for beginners.
- 1:8 Ratio (~7.1 degrees): Ideal for hardwoods like oak, walnut, or maple. The shallower angle reduces the risk of splitting in dense woods.
Through vs Half-Blind Dovetails
Through Dovetails
The tails and pins are visible from both sides. Often used for carcass construction, blanket chests, and decorative pieces where the joinery is meant to be seen.
Half-Blind Dovetails
The joint is only visible from one side. Commonly used for drawer fronts where you want the strength of dovetails without visible end grain on the face.
Tips for Cutting Dovetails
- Always mark your baseline (shoulder line) with a marking gauge set to the thickness of your mating board.
- Cut tails first when hand-cutting – they're easier to transfer to the pin board.
- Use a sharp dovetail saw with minimal set for clean cuts.
- Remove waste between tails and pins with a coping saw, then clean up with a chisel.
- Test fit often and pare carefully for a snug, gap-free joint.
