How Engine Displacement is Calculated

Displacement = (pi / 4) x bore2 x stroke x cylinders

Bore

The internal diameter of the cylinder, measured in mm or inches.

Stroke

The distance the piston travels from Top Dead Center (TDC) to Bottom Dead Center (BDC).

Cylinders

The total number of cylinders in the engine.

Result

The total swept volume of all cylinders combined, typically expressed in cc, liters, or cubic inches.

Common Examples

  • Small 4-cylinder: ~1,600 cc (1.6L / 97.6 cu in)
  • Mid-size V6: ~3,500 cc (3.5L / 213.6 cu in)
  • American V8: ~5,700 cc (5.7L / 350 cu in)
  • Supercar V12: ~6,500 cc (6.5L / 396.7 cu in)
